You know, i worked the big packet show in fort worth, saturday night,
we had all day sunday to rest and relax, before i caught another flight.
so i decided to walk down town anand' get myself a little fresh air.
before long, i found myself in front of a big church on the corner of the square.
Boy, i could hear that singinand' way out in the street, sure was a beautiful sound.
so i just walked up the steps anand' opened the door anand' started to go inside anand' sit down.
but before i could, a young man walked over to me an said: andquot;excuse me, sir,
andquot;but i canand't let you in with that big black hat, those jeans, that beard anand' long hair.
So i just left, went back outside, sat down on that kerbing, an i thought to myself:
thatand's the house of the lord. that guyand's got the hell of a nerve.
tellinand' me i canand't worship anywhere i please.
so right there, in front of that church, i just knelt down on my knees.
I said: andquot;lord, i know i donand't look like much, but i didnand't think youand'd mind.
andquot;i just wanted to be with your people, lord: itand's been a long time.
andquot;a while ago, a saw a wino over there in the alley, all bent over in tears,
andquot;anand' i thought how one stained glass window, from this church, would feed his family for years.andquot;
andquot;then thereand's those fine cars parked outside: too many for me to count.
andquot;made me think how people walked for days to hear your sermon on the mount.
andquot;then thereand's those fine ladies in the choir, lord, singinand' like they really love it.
andquot;hell, last night, they were dancinand' on the front row of my show: drinkinand' beer, screamin: and'sing shove it.and'
andquot;you know, even john the baptist wouldnand't be welcome in this place,
andquot;with his coat made of camel hair anand' sandals on his feet anand' a long beard on his face.
andquot;you know, lord, when you come back to get your children, anand' take and'em beyond the clouds,
andquot;to live forever in heaven with you: well, iand'd sure hate to be in this crowd.
andquot;you know, lord, iand'm not perfect; some even call me no count.
andquot;but iand'll tell you: i believe a man is judged by whatand's in his heart, not whatand's in his bank account.
andquot;so if this is what religion is: a big car, a suit anand' a tie,
andquot;then i might as well forget it lord, and'cause i canand't qualify.
andquot;oh, by the way, lord, right before they kicked me out, didnand't i see a picture of you?
andquot;with sandals anand' a beard. believe you had long hair too.andquot;
andquot;well, this is paycheck, signing off.
andquot;iand'll be seeinand' you lord, i hope.andquot;
