About Us
Welcome to Letters & Letters — a home for anyone who’s ever wondered why we say the things we say.
What We Cover
Language is full of small mysteries hiding in plain sight. Why do we say “break a leg” before a performance? Where did a word like “machete” actually come from? What quote perfectly captures the way you’re feeling today? We chase down the answers to questions like these and share them here.
Our content lives in three places:
- Quotes — collections of quotes for every mood and moment, from love and loss to strength and starting over
- Word Origins — the real, researched stories behind the words we use without a second thought
- Idioms & Phrases — where common sayings actually came from, and how they’ve changed meaning over time
Why We Started This
Most people use hundreds of idioms and borrowed words every day without ever asking where they came from. We think those stories are worth telling — they’re surprising, sometimes funny, and they change the way you hear ordinary language. A good quote can do the same thing: put words to something you already felt but couldn’t quite say.
Who This Is For
Letters & Letters is for the curious — writers, students, teachers, language learners, or anyone who just likes a good “wait, really?” moment. No linguistics degree required.
